this could be the start of something special
After not too much deliberation, I went ahead and purchased Scuffletown.org. Playing “The Name Game” is fun for a while, but nobody had a problem with Scuffletown the first time around and nobody really had a problem with it after that, just wondered if we couldn’t come up with anything better. I thought about leisurekill, but, as Alex already mentioned, there might be too much controversy about the pronunciation, etc. Also, getting the UK ending was not really feasible. I think it is possible to change the site name for a small fee, but I say we just stick with scuffletown for a while, maybe change it to scuffster.
Rather than kill myself trying to write the whole blasted upload thing in perl myself, I just installed a shareware/freeware system called “Movable Type” (per John’s savvy recommendation). It’s basically meant for weblogs or “blogs,” but I believe it allows you to upload pictures also. We don’t have something called Image:Magick, so we can’t do thumbnails of photos, but everything else looks functional. I will probably continue to work on a more filepile-like site in which we can also exchange mp3s, movies, etc, but don’t hold your breath. It is largely contingent on how much my brother might be willing to help me with the code.
Sherburne, maybe you can help me out here — can we have multiple logins for the blog or do we all use the same name and password? I haven’t figured it all out yet.
I’m going to try and make the blog look a little less gay today. This of course is the default look. If anybody wants to come up with a layout, a banner or anything else, let me know and I will do my best to redo the look. Once you have a name and password, you should be able to modify the look yourself, but of course only do this if you know what you are doing. Definitely someone should come up with a banner.
The site is hosted by www.superuser.net and the plan we got was web 750 pre-pay plan which was $60 bucks. We have 750 Mb of space and are allowed 60 GB of monthly traffic. I’m guessing this will be plenty, but if not we can consider another plan. You are welcome to make a donation to me at any time. I have all the password info for this too, if you want to ftp something to the site, make a scuffletown.org mail account, create a database of your unmatched socks, etc.
Actually, I’ve been thinking of making an “if/then” system based on the popular party game, stay tuned for that…

het, man. thanks for setting all this up. this is really cool. i’m happy to hear that this is, for the most part, made simpler for webmastering due to the ready-made software. this site is already better than what i personally could have hope for. it almost feels like a hybrid e-zine/forum. i’ll get some comics posted a.s.a.p.
CHEERS.
