Unicorn in the Garden
It never really hit me until checking out 3FJ’s copy of Cartoon Modern last night that there was a sort of “revolution” in the animation world during the 50s when “designers” started playing around with animation using an approach much different than the “draughtsmen” who were ordinarily employed by studios at that time. The “cartoon modern” style leaned towards flattened perspective, hyper-goemetrized figures, minimal palettes, and emphasis on “line” over “shading.”
One of the trendsetting studios for this style was UPA, who created this short based on a James Thurber story in 1953.

Looks like Fensler has been hard at work on more G.I. Joe PSA’s. I’m really stuck on #25 (above), but I also laughed pretty hard at #22, and I find #8 quite elegant in its nihilistic simplicity.

Sam Paradise’s cross-country trek annotated on a google-map. Here’s an interview with the creator.
Comments are off for this postHow’s the sun doing?
Fine, thanks! The latest picture of the sun, updated regularly. I can’t figure out how regularly, and I also can’t figure out why the image is timestamped an hour from now. Either the observatory is in the ocean, or they are using non-daylight-savings-time.

Apparently, I missed out on this guy, when I lived in the DC area. I was right with you when you mentioned Captain 20, but I missed out on the phenom that was Petey Greene.
And also this tribute from The Common Denominator. And this general information about WDCA.

I don’t know why I was so fascinated by Quisp as a kid. Maybe because of all the quazy commercials.
